Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer.  Picnics, barbecues, swimming pools and ball games all figure prominently in this long weekend kickoff to the season of long days and warm Artist: Monty Singer (Navajo).nights.  We are finally shaking off our cabin fever.  Amidst the celebrating, it is good to step back and reflect on the somber meaning of the day, commemorating the countless warriors who gave their lives to preserve our democratic way of life.

Native Americans have served proudly and courageously in every major conflict from the Revolutionary War to the War in Afghanistan.  Let us remember and honor all our fallen warriors who died to protect our sovereign freedoms.

Sovereignty—the right and practice of self-governance and self-determination—is the cornerstone of our nation.  The Native American Rights Fund fights tirelessly to defend the sovereignty and rights of tribes across the nation.  Please join NARF—and the tribes we serve—in remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free.
