§ 101. Short Title, Purposes and Definitions
(a) Short title. This code shall be entitled “The Grand Traverse Band Burial Fund Code”.
(b) Purpose. The Grand Traverse Band Burial Code shall provide assistance with funeral expenses at the time of death for all Tribal members.
(c) Definitions. As used in this code:
(1) “Anniversary date”. Date marking enrollment period for payment of benefits, which is August 1 of each calendar year.
(2) “Child”. Person between the ages of 1–5.
(3) “Enroll”. To comply with all requirements for membership in the Grand Traverse Band and to be placed on the membership rolls.
(4) “Infant”. Person between the age of 0–1 year.
(5) “Person”. A human being.
(6) “Tribal Member”. A person eligible for membership in the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and who has completed his/her requirements and has been officially enrolled with the tribe's membership office and who has been placed on the Tribal rolls. Tribal member included membership by adoption and infants under ninety (90) days old who are eligible to enroll but who have not yet done so.

§ 102. Creation of Burial Fund
There is hereby created a burial fund insurance program to provide assistance with funeral expense at the time of death for Tribal members.

The enrollment period is from August 1 to July 31.

§ 104. Persons Covered
(a) All persons covered must be Tribal members.
(b) In the case of infants, parents shall have ninety (90) days after birth to enroll said infants.
(c) Members over one (1) year of age will be covered by this fund as of August 1 following the date of their enrollment in the Tribe.

§ 105. Fetus, Miscarriage, Stillborn
This policy will cover up to $1,000.00 of costs incurred with the disposal, cremation, or a funeral of a stillborn child, fetus, or miscarriage.

The benefit check shall be payable jointly to the person responsible for the funeral expense and the funeral home or crematorium.

§ 107. Schedule of Benefits
(a) Birth to one (1) year: payments shall be one thousand dollars ($1,000.00).
(b) One (1) year to five (5) years: payments shall be one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00)
(c) Five (5) years and above: payments shall be two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500.00)
(d) The schedule of benefits may be raised or lowered from time to time by Tribal Council resolution without the need of a formal amendment to this Burial Fund Code.

Applications for benefits shall be made through the GTB's Membership Benefit's Office.
